---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------- Chapter 25: Bad News for Tuft -------------------- -------------------- And Bad News for Dark Haven --------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Arlon, Tatiana, Shade and Silver have all agreed to meet up the evening of their return from the Glade trip. Shade did not venture on the trip, but met the group when they flew back in. However, before the four meet up that evening, Arlon and Tatiana bump into Falrun .... (Arlon:) "Would you mind indulging me in a small chat?" If Falrun agrees, Arlon will suggest going near where the tunnel adventure was - up on the rocks, near the sea. (Falrun:) "Sure, I'd be glad to indulge in a small chat but why is it necessary to talk on Mindak's Rock?" (Arlon:) "It is not necessary at all, it is just a nice setting with the sea and all. Plus we would be away from the crowds, a distraction I don't care for at this time. We could go somewhere else if you feel uncomfortable there." (Falrun:) "Mindak's Rock is fine. I was just wondering if there was some special reason that you picked that location. Lead on." (Tatiana:) OOC: It will be obvious Tatiana cares for Arlon, but she rarely makes physical contact with him if it at all looks as if Falrun is uncomfortable. Tatiana seemed bored with the whole affair and was watching the scenery. She seems to lag behind a bit, not paying attention to the conversation Arlon and Falrun are having. (Falrun:) Even though Falrun agreed to join you on the rock, you see that he looks a little nervous and, if you are observant which I'm sure that you both are, you notice that he tries to keep both of you in sight at the same time. If one of you get behind him he tries to quickly but inconspicuously adjust his position so that, once again, he can see you both. (Tatiana:) Being trained in the observation of people's behaviour she raised an eyebrow at Falrun because of his odd behaviour. Then she rolled her eyes and snorted "Get real! I'm only here at Arlon's request. I'd rather be shopping, I've still got some money left after buying this dandy weapon!" she said patting her rune-covered long sword. "If you'd rather me leave, talk to him" she said patting Arlon on the back. "I don't know what he wants to talk about either. It's the wizard in him that makes him so secretive!" (Falrun:) You also notice that his hands don't ever stray far form his sword hilts. You've never noticed him this nervous in the town or around crowds of people before. (Tatiana:) OOC: This is suppose to come across in a bardic way. Not insulting, it's not intended that way at all. Just friendly. Tell me if it came across otherwise "Would you relax! I heard a story once about how to catch a turkey. They're really wary creatures you know. Very skittish, and exceptionally difficult to get close to." "Anyway, what you do is get a really fast dog, and have him chase the turkey. The dog is usually a little faster than the turkey, but the turkey can fly. Not well, but it can, and it will fly up to the lower branches of a tree." "Anyway, the turkey is so dumb that it concentrates on the dog as it barks at it from the ground. You come up from behind it with a bow and arrow and shoot it down. The stupid thing is so worried about the dog being able to get into the tree, that it doesn't watch the other things around it." "Don't be a turkey" she said with a friendly laugh. (Falrun:) He settles a little visibly as he tries to loosen up a bit. He then replies with a wry grin, "I guess I'll just have to learn to keep an eye on both of you then, won't I?" :) (Arlon:) OOC: Falrun still doesn't trust me, aye As Tatiana and Falrun make comments during the walk to Mindak's rock, Arlon does not seem visibly affected - he is quite focused. (Falrun:) Once on top, "So, ehh, what is it you would like to talk about?" (Arlon:) Arlon will stand on the rock with his hands behind his back and looking out towards the sea, his tone is serious. "I have some things I need to tell you .. Yes, I was invisible and following the group while we were in the caves. You are very perceptive and seemed to notice me fairly early. Then later in the unexplored tunnels you seemed to try to 'persuade' me to show myself. I needed time to think and try to take focus away from my incident with Keilan. I almost destroyed him .. I needed to be in the background and be alone; but I also wanted to keep an eye on the group just in case I was needed. Invisibility made this possible." "The other thing is that the dynamics of the group is changing. Special relationships are forming which could bring unexpected consequences. Silver and Shade are becoming close as are Tatiana and myself." (Falrun:) OOC: Just to clear some things up... During the time that passed between it becoming obvious that Silver and Shade were an item, Falrun has made it quite clear that he never really had any designs on Silver. He is quite comfortable with the situation as it is although he still considers Silver to be a friend and will help her out whenever she may need it. (Silver:) OOC: Reaction to this: Silver will, I think, sense this, and feel glad about it. She never would want to alienate Falrun on purpose, or even by accident, if it could be helped. (Arlon:) "I can see myself being blinded by rage if something seriously wounded Tatiana in battle, and trying to destroy it without regard to those around me. Silver and Shade may also feel similarly. Emotional ties may also bring internal conflict at certain times. I may not be able to stay objective. There needs to be someone that can see any problems and be able to step in. Keilan is too haughty, Dithion is too rash, Silver, Shade, Tatiana and myself have emotional attachments, Kaeyar is mischievous. Only you, my friend, have stayed out of the internal conflicts. You are intelligent and very perceptive, I believe you have the only chance to stop an incident that would destroy our group. This group has the ability to go very far but you will be needed for that to happen." "This is how I see things and the reasons I gave why I believe you will be the glue that holds us together." He then will turn and look at Falrun. (Tatiana:) Tatiana nodded her head with approval. "Well said Arlon. I don't think I could have said it better myself at all!" (Falrun:) After hearing Arlon speak, Falrun relaxes slightly although he still keeps an eye on Arlon's hands behind his back. "Ahhh, I see. And how do you expect me to keep you from losing it and charging anything that may have been able to severely injure Tatiana while with our group or to even keep Keilan and you off each other's throats, if that is what you choose to do? Of course, I'll do what I can, but then I would imagine that everyone else will also be willing to help in any way possible. I couldn't imagine anyone of our group standing by while one or the other tries to run amok. I guess passive lack of concern isn't one of this groups strong points." (Tatiana:) "I don't think that will be too much of a problem. The power to lead is not something taken or meted out. It is something given, I believe Arlon just gave you an oath of loyalty of some sort." "While I'm not great at any one thing, and a times a bit too impulsive, I'd like you to know I agree with Arlon's assessment, and I too will accept your wisdom and follow your lead in controlling the independent natures of our group." "I don't think I could give you an oath that I could keep. My heart rules my actions a little more often than I'd like too. But I will try to aid you in being the keystone of the party. (Arlon:) He will seem a bit more jovial now. "Well Falrun, that is a burden of leadership; finding a way to keep internal order. Actually a sharp word may be all that is necessary in many cases. The problem is that none of us have really been able to stop the others during an internal conflict. When Keilan and I went at it, Silver was right there and she could do nothing. She had every opportunity to stop my castings after Keilan's attack; but was unable to because of shock. Just before the completion of the spell, I stopped. Major disaster was avoided because I was able to pull myself back. Because of the reasons I stated, I believe that you have the best chance of stopping an internal disaster. (Tatiana:) "And I wouldn't worry about Arlon losing it on my behalf. I'm capable of taking care of myself, and he knows I have an independent nature, and not to stifle it." (Arlon:) He will smile at this "Yes I know my dear; but there are many dangers here and one of them may be lucky or unfortunate enough to harm you and that is when I may crack." (Falrun:) "I suppose that with both of your help I can try to keep a straight head and make decisions for the group's best interest. I'm also flattered that you would think me capable of this job, I'll try not to let you down." (Arlon:) "Think of me as an advisor. I'll back you up when I can. You could not let me down, you may let yourself down however; hopefully I can be there to assist you at that time. (Falrun:) "Do you plan on making this idea public or will it, for the most part, be kept between us?" (Arlon:) "The others need to make that choice on their own. As they see the nucleus form, I think they'll rally around it. I have never been one to give up leadership; but you my friend, with deeds, have earned it." "Now, did you say something about shopping, Tatiana. I need to get some spell components myself." (Tatiana:) "Yes, I did say something about shopping, and spell components are not first on the list" she said with a smile. "We are getting you some new clothes. A wizard you may be, but you going to be a stylish wizard when I'm through with you" Turning back to include Falrun. "Shall we head back?" (Falrun:) He rolls his eyes as if to say, "Women!". "Sure Tatiana, lead the way." During shopping, Tatiana picks some outfits for Arlon .... (Arlon:) While shopping for them with Tatiana, he holds up the clothes and says "This is stylish?" :) (Tatiana:) While shopping, "Of course it is! Just don't wear it when you do your experiments or you'll stain it." :) OOC: She'll have actually picked out about 3 outfit for you. spending about 100gp on you in total And later, at the Tavern, Arlon, Tatiana, Shade and Silver meet for a meal .... (Arlon:) Arlon likes to be punctual and will try to get to the tavern early, I think Tatiana is a bit easier going so he will try to rush her along a little - you know women :) Arlon is dressed in a green and brown, very small checkered, trousers. Loosely worn to help with the heat. And an Ecru silk shirt. He looks very sharp in his new clothes. Arlon will greet Silver and Shade in his normal jovial fashion "Good afternoon you two; so are we ready for some interesting conversation?" (Silver:) As for clothes, Silver is wearing a robe of the same material she wore before, which is a sort of shimmering silk, which shows different pastel colours as the light catches it, although this time it is shorter than before, and is sleeveless. She wears a plaited belt made of some form of leather or skin, possibly from blue lightning snakeskin. "Afternoon, Arlon. You're looking good" says Silver (Arlon:) "I seem to be out of Arl, I've had other things to do." squeezes Tatiana's hand. "I'll order some of the 'home' brew, the house wine should be fine however." (Silver:) "Fine ! They do a lovely chilled white here. Lets get some of that - and some of the spring water ?" she queries Shade. (Shade:) "Thanks Silver, spring water for me would be nice" (Arlon:) "I am sorry Shade, I forgot about that. My mind seems to be more occupied with other things lately." smiles at Tatiana "So, what is the story with you two; I know Tatiana and myself are having a wonderful time getting to know each other. (Silver:) "Aaah. Yes. You tell them, Ebu ...." she smiles warmly at Shade, sitting back in her chair. OOC: Keep wanting to say she smiles "up" at Shade, but he is 5 inches shorter than Silver. (Shade:) "So are we, Arlon" - the drow smiles to the other couple - "I never imagined I could have been so happy." OOC: Once I had a girlfriend who was quite taller than me (not so difficult I should say, as I'm more or less as short as Shade) and I used to call her "pinnacle of my dreams" (Arlon:) "Yes, a marvelous feeling, isn't it." "So, is there some significance to the similar dress you two have?" (Silver:) Silver looks _so_ happy right now. She is all smiles. Realization dawns, and she says to Shade "But of course, Ebu, they don't know ... that we have ... that we ... umm ... invoked Mielikki's blessing on our bonding, and it was accepted. Oh, it would have made a tale worth telling, 'Ana" she smiles. (Tatiana:) Tatiana's mouth drops open and then snaps shut. A more surprised look on her face couldn't be imagined. Her mouth opens and shuts a few times but nothing comes out. Finally she quits trying and takes a very big drink of wine. She lost control of her thoughts due to the surprise and the thought that broke into her mind was just as startling. *SHE WHAT!!!?* (Arlon:) "Bonding? Sounds like a real down to earth event. It seems things are moving along really fast for you two." he says with a bit of a smile. (Tatiana/Tuft:) *I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!!!* *Would you stop shouting! You're giving me a headache* A look of confusion crossed her face, before she realized what Arlon had said. She looked up at him with the same stammering look and punched him in the arm a little harder than she really wanted to. (Arlon:) Being a normally confused male "Owww!" he rubs his arm "What did I say?" (Tatiana/Tuft:) *But we shared a mouse that I killed! That's supposed to be symbolic isn't it?* She got up from the table uncomfortably, "I'm sorry, no really I'm sorry. I've got to take care of something" *How should I know, I'm not an owl! And neither is Silver* *But she was an owl, she should know* *Please hold on* she thought with love. She turned to leave then stopped and looked at Arlon as if expecting him to follow her. She turned away again and began to leave. "I'm really sorry, I'm really happy for you. Honest I am. I just have to take care of something right now!" (Arlon:) Realizes that Tatiana is really upset; but not exactly sure why. "Uhh, would you excuse us for a while .. I think there may be something wrong with the wine. We'll just get a little fresh air. You two sit and enjoy." There is a bit of concern in his voice - he would have said she left the stove on; but of course we don't have one. Arlon will move with Tatiana and put his arm around her as they walk out. (Tatiana/Tuft:) *Happy for them? What do you mean? She dumped me!* *It wasn't meant to be, Tuft. You know it never would have worked. She's a protector of nature, not a part of it! She's only a human after all.* Tuft fell silent in contemplation. *I guess I just need some time to myself for a little while* *Don't do anything rash! Don't you dare go out of communication range!* *I need to be alone* *I'll leave you alone so long as I know where to get ahold of you! I'll track you down if you don't. I can do it too* *Alright, But I'll contact you when I'm ready* *I better be able to feel you're there* Tuft fell silent, but Tatiana could still feel his presence if she concentrated. If she wanted to she could interrupt his thoughts, but she left him be. She staggered out of the Tavern. (Arlon:) "What's wrong Tatiana?" (Tatiana:) "It's Tuft, I knew Silver wasn't interested in Tuft the same way he was interested in her. But I thought it would work itself out, so I kept hiding what I knew from him. Silver's surprise lowered my guard, and a flood of bad news was picked up by him. And now he's really upset" (Silver:) As Tatiana gets up, and Arlon follows her, she turns to Shade. "Oh Ebu, this is about Tuft. I know it is. Oh _dammit_ why does everything have to be so complicated. I'd never knowingly hurt him. Dammit dammit dammit dammit" she mutters and moves to stand. "I must talk to him. Wait for me ?" and she strokes Shade's jaw as she turns to go. Silver runs outside to find Arlon and Tatiana .... (Silver:) Outside, she scans quickly around for Arlon and Tatiana. She almost runs over to them, but stops before she gets there. "'Ana ?" she calls, tentatively. She waits nervously, biting her lower lip, seeing what the reaction is before she moves closer. (Tatiana:) Tatiana looked up to see Silver approaching and bent her head in a shrug of apology. (Silver:) "'Ana, I ... umm ... He ... err ... I need to go to him, to explain. I need to know where he is. _Please_ 'Ana. I wish I could have explained it to him first. I _know_ I should have told him before now. Please ?" (Tatiana:) Tatiana shook her head now, trying to think of what to say to make things alright. (Silver:) She considers for a moment, then says "No, even better, tell him I'll wait for him in the large crooked tree where we caught the mouse. He'll know where I mean" "Tell him I'll wait there until he comes." And with that, she looks pleadingly at Tatiana, with a sort of 'please forgive me' expression, and runs around the corner of the building. The familiar silver-owl shape can be seen winging it's way towards the forest. (Tatiana:) The look Silver gave her stopped her words, and she watched Silver fly off in the form of an owl. (Tatiana/Tuft:) She looked to Arlon, I need to talk to Tuft for a moment. *Tuft?* *Tuft! please talk. Silver is on her way to the large crooked tree where you caught the mouse.* She knew he could hear her, she had forced the thoughts through, and because they were magically bonded, neither could truly ignore the other's thoughts if they were insistent enough. For that matter they couldn't hide thoughts either if they really wanted to find something out. But it was rude and didn't make for a good relationship. *She said she'll be waiting until you show up.* *I love you!* With that she fell silent and hoped things would be okay. She thought she understood what it was like to have a child growing up. "He's not responding. But I think he'll show up before too long. Let's go back in and make sure Shade's okay." (Arlon:) Arlon will put his hands on Tatiana's hips and say: "I want to make sure you're ok first." (Tatiana:) "I'm okay, I just don't know how to deal with Tuft's infatuation with Silver." "But I'm sure she'll figure out how to handle him. She's much more mature than Tuft. He's only 5 years old. Which in owl years makes him about maybe 20? But then he's got an extended life because he became my familiar, so I don't know how old he really is" (Arlon:) When they get back to the table - Arlon will first hold the chair out for Tatiana. "Well this is turning out to be a very eventful night, Silver may be out for a little bit - I am not sure how bird relationships work" he shrugs. "Now that it is only us _bards_" he smiles "what shall we talk about?" "Hey, I have a little surprise for the next group of demons we meet. I got a protection scroll from Mendahl in return for letting him study the wand." (Tatiana:) The hours passed and the conversation was light. Tatiana participated, but it was evident that her mind was preoccupied, but only because her friends knew her well. If they had been strangers no one would have noticed she was concerned about something. Her bardic nature hid it well, but her perceptive friends weren't fooled. While Arlon, Tatiana and Shade sit in the Tavern, Silver is flying hard and fast .... (Silver:) Silver, in owl-form, powered her way as fast as she could to the crooked tree. She was aiming for speed, not grace or stealth - this was one meeting she could not afford to miss. (Tuft:) Sitting in an abandoned woodpeckers nest, Tuft sat watching the forest floor. He had picked this site to be the nest for Silver and himself. Owls picked a mate and it lasted for a lifetime. He had thought Silver was to be that mate. Most birds wouldn't have had this kind of depression, but Tuft was a familiar and had been influenced by the emotions of his chosen companion, Tatiana. Tatiana was a woman of intense emotions and Tuft was familiar with them because of the mental link the two shared. He sat there analyzing his feelings and tried to separate out those that were his and those that were Tatiana's. Sometimes it was hard to tell the difference. The tree he was in wasn't too far from the crooked tree, where he and Silver had caught their first mouse together. They had shared the mouse as well, how could she do that? Share the same mouse, which was a clear sign that they were starting the courting ritual, and then fly off with another? He heard Silver fly in through the forest canopy, She always did fly a little too noisily for a true owl. He felt the urge to go over and talk to her, but he knew she would be leaving shortly anyways. (Silver:) Arriving at the tree, she perched on one of the higher branches and settled down to wait. It would be a while, she knew. In a way, this was good - it would give her time to think. What could she say ? "If Only". Hmm. Life was filled with those, but she had always accepted what happened and went with it. There were such few times when she could not accept what her Goddess wove in the pattern of life. Jelka, yes that's true. And the crazy one. And ... the other times. Well, now there was Tuft. Perhaps if Ana hadn't blurted out .... but it wasn't her fault, not really. And that's just one more "if only". (Tuft:) He sat in the tree brooding for over two more hours. Silver was still down there waiting. He stepped out of the woodpeckers abandoned nest, and spread his wings out for a glide down to where Silver was sitting in the crooked tree. (Silver:) Silver saw the movement, but made no sign until Tuft glided down and perched on the branch several wingspans away from her. For what seemed hours they perched in silence. Silver knew that she would have to say something soon. (Tuft:) Tuft had made Silver wait long, and he had expected her to talk a little more freely when he landed. 'I'll never understand women' he thought to himself. The silence grew till it became uncomfortable, his anger grew as he waited. The moment almost came when he was going to take off when Silver finally spoke. (Silver:) [ Tuft. You know now. I ... regret ... the way you found out. I needed to tell you first ] (Tuft:) Tuft clenched his talons into the tree in anger. One of the emotions he picked up from Tatiana. He was more human than owl sometimes. (Silver:) [ Anger is only natural, and you feel betrayed. I think I know now how you feel. But it could never be, Tuft. ] (Tuft:) Tuft turned his head around with his eyes wide open. [How can you possibly understand !] he screeched at her. At a loss for something to say he continued [What about the mouse we shared! That's a clear sign of courting!] (Silver:) [ The sharing of a mouse was cruel, but I thought of you then almost as a teacher, Tuft. As a father. For it is coming to your time as a father, soon. ] (Tuft:) Tuft stared at Silver waiting for her to continue, not quite sure how to respond. (Silver:) [ And that is why. You could have built our nest, but I could never have filled it, for I cannot provide you with the many broods you need. ] (Tuft:) Tuft cocked his head in confusion. (Silver:) [ I could not raise chicks, since I am not fertile in this form. And to be with you and deny you what you deserve - many broods of healthy chicks - would be even more cruel. ] (Tuft:) Tuft blinked then pulled his head back. With a ruffle of his wings he eased his grip on the tree. His eyes narrowed as he thought. 'She can't have chicks?' the animal side of Tuft was appeased and his sense of urgency for a mate lessened with this new understanding. But his emotional side, he got from Tatiana, tugged at his hurt feelings. Silence followed for a time as Silver let Tuft think for a moment. Silver instinctively knew a turning point had arrived. After a while, Tuft nodded his head in understanding, but still said nothing. (Silver:) [ But though I cannot share your nest, I would still want to learn from you - your skills in hunting and stealthy flying are far better than my own. ] (Tuft:) Tuft looked at her with surprise. (Silver:) [ I still want to fly with you, Tuft ... ] (Tuft:) He did still want to be with Silver and he felt better that she said she wanted to be with him. He still wasn't sure though. [ I think, I need some time alone first ] he finally said. Silver looked at Tuft with concern, but knew everything was going to be okay. And Silver returns .... (Silver:) Hours had passed since Silver flew off, and the others had eaten by the time she returned. Deep in thought, she entered the tavern, and came towards the others. (Tatiana:) Tatiana looked up as Silver entered. (Silver:) She smiled thinly at them, looking very tired, very subdued. "Not much of a treat, I'm afraid" she said, indicating the food that the others had eaten while she was out. "But I'm glad you're here." This last comment was directed mainly at Shade, but encompassed all three. She caught Tatiana's eye and shrugged her shoulders slightly. To her, she will say softly, still very subdued "Could you check on him later for me, 'Ana ? But do it gently ...." (Tatiana:) "How did he take it? I haven't tried to talk to him yet, and he hasn't contacted me. But I can tell he's in the area." (Silver:) "I don't know, 'Ana" she shakes her head sadly, biting her lower lip nervously. "I really don't know." "In some ways, he's so young. In others ...." her voice trails off. "I just hope he believed me" she said, looking at Tatiana directly. Some days passed before the group met up together once more. During that time .... (Silver:) The day was overcast, but still warm. It seemed as though heavy rains might come soon. Silver had gone off to check on the seedlings she had brought with her from home, and was now walking through the Wide, looking around. Her hair is braided and swept back from her face, a new style for her. Seeing Shade, she runs over to him, links her arm with his, kissing him in greeting. (Shade:) The drow's face brightens visibly as he sees his beloved. (Silver:) "Come, Ebu" she says, eyes sparkling mischievously. "I've got something for you - a surprise" (Shade:) "Living at your side, day after day, is such a joyful surprise" - he murmurs softly - "I sometimes wonder why the gods have chosen me." (Silver:) Entering a nearby tavern, she sits in a corner, and orders a jug of chilled fruit juice and two glasses. Waiting until the drinks arrive, she chatters excitedly about her seedlings and how healthy they are now. When they are left alone, she brings out a small leather pouch, fastened by a thong around the top. She places it in Shade's hands, and waits almost breathlessly, wide-eyed and nervously smiling. "I ... I hope you like it Ebu" she says. Opening the pouch, Shade sees a necklace made from different materials woven together in a strange and beautiful way. The covering is silver, obviously, but there are strands of material within the outer silver which are difficult to make out. "There are four parts to it," Silver explains. "There are strands of your hair, strands of mine, thinly carved strips of laurel bark, and a silver covering to give it strength. The four parts are there to signify each of the four elements. The laurel is for continuation, rebirth, a symbol which lasts forever, enduring when all other things die. And our hair entwined ... well, that's us" she smiles. (Shade:) The drow solemnly locks the necklace around his neck. Then he smiles at Silver and he kisses her hands "I had never understood how great a gift life can be 'til I met you. Thanks dear." (Silver:) Silver smiles brilliantly, pleased at Shade's reaction to her present. "And we'd better start teaching you about the arts of healing" she grins. "You're going to make a wonderful healer, Ebu. A great healer needs a great capacity for kindness and love." OOC: Whisper - how do we go about teaching each other non-weapon proficiencies ? This is something which would be on-going between Silver and Shade. Trouble is, Shade isn't going to get the 2 slots needed for another 8 levels or so. So what about skills like this that are being taught ? Reduced effectiveness, or what? (DM:) Hmmm. Interesting. First off which things do you want to teach him? (Obviously healing is one of the profs.) I would say that he would be able to learn rudimentally the skill. As in, no HP's would be gained if he tried his healing knowledge, but he could be able to identify healing herbs, and at least stem the loss of blood and HP's. He would also be able, with a -4 penalty to rolls, to identify some of the rudimentary illnesses etc, and be able to tell the patient the general effects the disease would have. Such stuff. (Silver:) Well, she would ignore the herbalism aspects, because that would be just mundane learning by rote all the plant names, plant lore, properties and so on, which she wouldn't think would interest him too much. She would give him a couple of simple recipes for refreshing herbal tea and such stuff - more a pick-you-up than a serious cure. She would concentrate on the more practical aspects. Start off with the skill of massage - which would help to tone the body, ease tiredness, etc as well as being fun ;-) A few recipes for oils would go in here .... Then she would go through the first-aid aspects, like stemming blood flow, easing breathing problems, etc. Once the first-aid aspects bits are covered, which would include sucking poison out of puncture wounds (yeeuch!) she would then go on to cover diseases, stages of illness and such stuff. But, the fun stuff first ! Something else that occurred .... (DM:) Silver: The safest place for your seedlings would probably be on the grounds of Rhuleck's Farm, the only walled in compound with any real garden or good soil. Some more info gleaned during your uneventful stay til now constitutes of the following. Rhuleck's Farm survived the native attack unscathed, as it did not appear to have been a target. (Silver:) Guessed that the farm might be the only real place to plant the seedlings. Is it possible that Silver could have flown out during the last few days to the farm, and arranged for them to care for the stuff ? I would fly in owl form to just outside the farm, change into human form, walk the short distance in. Flying back I would use bat-form. (DM:) Okay, it is no prob to have flown there during the last few days, and left the seedlings there. What Rhuleck wants is fairly simple. The use of your seedlings which produce food. He will take good care of your plants as they grow, but wants to be able to use new offspring for himself. You find the place a hive of activity, a refuge for those who do not like city/village life too much, and cannot hack it as an outdoorsman. Some are simple farmers, others ex adventurers, whose stomachs for fighting and bloodshed have left them. (Silver:) On hearing from Rhuleck what he wants for tending for the plants, Silver says "Why of course !" She smiles warmly at him. "By all means propagate what you can for your own use." After a moments consideration she adds "You are such a kind man. Is there anything I can do to return the favour you have shown me. Anything you need taken back to Dark Haven, or brought out here ?" Asking him to show me where his farmland currently stretches, she will try to invoke Mielikki's blessing while he stands by .... "My sweet Goddess, I ask humbly for the gift of kindness and growth. Kindness to one who works in Your realm, And growth for his ventures" OOC: Plant Growth (second use of spell, area effect for harvest) Apart from Silver's visit to Rhuleck, the party has a new member ... one they rescued from the Glade .... (Keilan:) The next day he returns with the cub in tow. The cub is now walking alongside Keilan apparently having regained his (the cub's) strength. As Keilan approaches closer to whomever, you notice he is covered in scratches. His arms, legs, and even his face are marked up with many little rows of four claw marks, suspiciously like a cat would make. Offering an explanation before any questions are voiced, Keilan says smiling, "Well someone has to teach Raoh how to fight. He's a fierce one too. Bit my arm and would've taken off a piece of meat if he was any bigger." Keilan's left forearm does indeed have four teeth marks where there were none before. OOC: Raoh rhymes with how, now, and cow, and begins with a normal 'r' sound. "Raoh is an old dwarven word meaning tooth. Well I suppose 'fang' would be a better translation. Large fangs, like a dragon's. It seemed like a good name, given how much he likes to bite." Over the next few days (and weeks?) Keilan is hardly ever seen without the growing cub beside him. Raoh is growing fast too, adding weight to match his size. Gradually the claw marks on Keilan fade. The whole group eventually meet up once more .... (DM:) I assume you guys spent several weeks game time getting to know the town a bit better, helped out with the repairs, which are almost complete, and a brand new moat has been added to the town. From your infrequent talks with Mendahl and Daermon you gather that news of the attack was magically sent to the town's sponsors (Cormyr, Sembia, Waterdeep, Hillsfar and other city states) who responded by immediately sending out a fleet of well equipped troops and more adventurers. You guys figure it will get mighty crowded out here in a few months, so if you guys want to build a building as house and headquarters, now (or soon) is the time. It will also however take away some of the immediate concerns about the safety of the city. Thus (and whatever you guys have been doing) stands business. One of those hot nights, after a hard days work, or just tired from too much studying or hunting, whatever, you guys are together again, sitting at the seaboard tavern, mulling over your favourite drinks, flirting with your girlfriends or the waitresses, whatever strikes your fancy, just having enjoyed a beautiful red sundown. (Keilan:) When the group meets in the tavern, Raoh curls up by Keilan's feet or sometimes in his lap. When he's feeling frisky Raoh will perch on a stool next to Keilan's chair and eye the many sights of the tavern. Raoh also takes an interest in Tuft, though perhaps they are best kept apart for now. (DM:) All of a sudden cries go up, coming from the side where the gates are. As you sit and wait for the rumour to reach you, you hear a new arrival at the table next to you say the following: "It's Hewnar and Shadeem! They have returned! Only them! They looked close to death, their clothes shredded, and all their weapons and armour missing from them! What could have happened! We have not seen any native patrols since shortly after the battle! Have they returned?" (Tatiana:) Tatiana turns with a start towards the door. This was dire news indeed, another ballad would be composed in the name of the fallen heroes. She would need more information though to write the ballad and do it justice. (DM:) The table explodes in angry voices, and shouts of concern and dismay. You recognize the names. They are the names of a fierce warrior and a roguish lad, who are members of the famous 'Darkhaven Dozen', the locally largest and most powerful adventuring company. Their mages were topped in power only by Daermon and Mendahl themselves, and their clerics could have been patriarchs if they settled down. It appears however, that none of them survived, whatever it was they encountered, if the rumours prove true. You guys worry greatly, for if that mighty band has fallen, you guys are now the most powerful adventuring company in town. A position that comes with a lot of responsibility in a frontier town like this. Already you see some people glance at your table with a new look in their eyes. A look of expectation. (Dithion:) Dithion sits silently taking in the news of the deaths of the Darkhaven Dozen. (Silver:) Silver is concerned about this news straight away. "By Mielikki ! If there is something that has wiped out ten of the most powerful adventurers in this town, I think we had better find out more about it. Lets go and find out how much truth there is in this rumour ..." and she stands to leave, looking at the rest of the group. "Mendahl would be the best bet, don't you think ?" (Tatiana:) Tatiana had been sitting next to Arlon and Keilan, and she made to get up as well joining Silver in action. (Shade:) Shade looks at his friends "Hmmm, seems to me we have just won the group of the year contest, guys. We are in trouble. My opinion is let's try to help those injured people, then let's ask Mendahl what the Dozen was trying to do." (Tatiana:) "Perhaps they will tell us themselves, if we help them." (Falrun:) "I will have to agree with Shade. We should go and lend any aid to these two that we can offer. And, at the same time, we can find out what we may concerning their situation." He glances around the table, gets up and readies himself to go. (Arlon:) "That sounds good, since my magic is not healing, I will go seek Mendahl. Are you with me Tatiana?" (Keilan:) Tipped back in his chair as usual, "Hmm. Mendahl may know something but it seems to me the one's to ask would be Hewnar and Shadeem. Whatever got ahold of them is probably something they weren't prepared for; something new I'd wager that even Mendahl doesn't know about." (Tatiana:) Tatiana moved past Keilan and kicked the chair legs out from under him. She caught Keilan as he was taken by surprise, before he hit the ground. She gave him a wink. "You're getting slow with civilized life friend. I think we should go see what Hewnar and Shadeem have to say about their troubles" She pulled Keilan up to a full stand and grinned at him, then turned and headed out of the tavern. (Keilan:) In a mocking, playful tone, "Pah! Civilized life! It's traitorous vixens like you going around upsetting peaceful men like myself that cause all the world's troubles." (Tatiana:) Tatiana grinned back at Keilan's comment. "It's us women that need to roust you men off your butts to keep the world moving. But since you all don't really listen to what we say you mess it up. And that is what causes all the world's troubles!" She didn't wait for the response that would be coming mainly because it wasn't the time or place to irritate Keilan, so she moved away to ask the lad who told them the information where to go. (Keilan:) Keilan straightens his shirt about him, grabs his staff from where it leans against a wall, and accompanies those going to see about the two adventurers who have returned. Raoh pads along careful not to get stepped on by the tavern's other patrons. (Arlon:) As the others go to see the remnants of the Dozen, Arlon will be in search of Mendahl. "Find out what you can from them, they may be in too much shock to tell us anything right now; so I will see Mendahl." He then leaves to look for Mendahl - who may be in the tavern, so he'll take a quick scan and if he doesn't see him, Arlon will go to his tower. (Silver:) "That's what I meant, Arlon. Don't be so hasty ! I meant lets look for Mendahl because if anyone knows where the two survivors are, then he will" (Tatiana:) "Where's Hewnar and Shadeem now lad?" she called to the lad that came in telling the tale. (DM:) You ask the 'lad' (a halfling of probably 120 years of age :) ), if he can tell where the two surviving guys are, and start looking for Mendahl. Indignant at being called 'lad', the halfling responds "They are still near the gate. Some priests and Mendahl were there when I left ..." (Tatiana:) Tatiana cringed slightly at having mistaken the halfling for a small boy. Oh well it happens often with them. (Silver:) Silver raises an eyebrow and half smiles at Arlon. "Come on then !" (Arlon:) "Well, he is a powerful mage, after all." (DM/Halfling:) "... and I heard them talk of bringing the brave lads to the temple of Lathander." Then the guy plunges back into the conversation at his own table. This temple is one of the three temples in the works, the one closest to the seaboard, and the one most finished. And so the Eidolon travel to hear more from the survivors of the Darkhaven Dozen .... (Silver:) As the group travel over to the gate, Silver will be next to Shade. Occasionally, she looks over at Raoh ambling alongside Keilan and smiles at how self-important the cub seems now. (Tatiana:) Tatiana hustled out of the Tavern, but waited for the rest of the group to catch up. Her eyes briefly caught Arlon's to make sure where he was, then she continued on, reassured that they were all making their way to Lathander's temple. (Dithion:) Dithion follows along with the rest of the group. He seems deep in thought at the news. (Arlon:) Arlon will give Tatiana a quick wink and continues to move along; but at a much slower pace than usual. He is lost in thought - what will the implications be for him and the rest of the group now that the Darkhaven Dozen are now the Darkhaven Duo. Are we ready to be the #1 adventuring group. The group has come far since first arriving here; but has it come far enough to handle this responsibility ? He shrugs - "only time will tell" - he whispers and moves on at a quicker pace. The group head over to where they thought the two survivors might be .... (DM:) You guys are all going over to Lathander's Temple I presume, to check up on the two survivors of the Darkhaven Dozen. The Temple is surrounded by a fairly large mob of people, concerned about the fate of Dark Haven's champions. After some pushing and shoving, and some people recognizing you as the next adventuring company in line of succession to the Dark Haven's Champions position, you make your way through to the now nearly completed temple. (Silver:) As we push through the crowd, Silver tries to keep to the back of the group, leaving it to others to force their way through the mass of people. Just before the doors to the temple, Silver will look at the carved columns, frown slightly, shrug her shoulders and move in. She still seems put out by the crush of people outside. (DM:) Inside, the air is still and cool, voices mutter low about the recent tragedy, the tumult from outside dampened once the doors are shut again. A priest, recognizing you, leads you towards the altar, in front of which lie the two wounded. (Silver:) When the two surviving adventurers are in sight, Silver will make sure that both Hewnar and Shadeem are being tended to properly. (Falrun:) When the group arrives and sees the remains of the Darkhaven Dozen, Falrun will look over the condition of the two adventurers that remain. He is intent on discovering if they are suffering from physical wounds and if so, what kind. He will also look for any type of magical effects that he may be familiar with that may leave any visible evidence. (DM:) Their wounds are numerous and varied. Some obviously from weapons, what you expect from clashes with natives, but others from acid and fire. For now, the two sleep, with healer priests bent over them. Off to the side stand Mendahl, Shilara, Daermon, Sir Kael and the Morninglord Arthenon, the high priest of this temple. They see you come into the main hall of the temple, and wave you over. (Silver:) Looking curiously about the temple, she sees Mendahl waving to them. She gasps "She is here !" and immediately starts trying to straighten her clothing, brushing back a couple of stray locks of hair that had come loose. As they all move toward the group, she cannot keep her eyes from the Lady Shilara. (DM:) You see that the two adventurers are completely taken care of, and you all go over to the five dignitaries. (Arlon:) Arlon will walk up and stand near Mendahl and listen to the goings on. He will then say to Mendahl: "What does all this mean, Master? Is there anything I can do? (Silver:) "_We_. Is there anything _we_ can do." Silver will mutter under her breath. (DM/Sir Kael:) When you ask what you can do, and ask as to what happened, it is Sir Kael who speaks to you. "Our Lady Shilara discovered what seemed to be the remains of an ancient, ruined temple, some four days travel straight inland." (Silver:) When the Lady looks at the party, Silver will catch her eye, blush and look down. Hearing of her exploits in discovering the temple, Silver becomes very attentive, though still looking mainly at the Lady. (Dithion:) Dithion listens to the conversations with interest but doesn't say anything. He mutters things throughout...although little is easily heard... (DM/Sir Kael:) "This being one of the first signs of civilization, since your discovery of the temple-cave in the mines, we were curious to find out more about it. The Darkhaven Dozen was asked if they would like to investigate, and they agreed. They left ten days ago. Since the relative inactivity of the natives since the Great Battle, we figured that they would encounter little resistance, save for the natural hazards of this evil jungle. From the last lucid moments before the priests healed Hewnar and Shadeem and put them to sleep, we gather that we were wrong." "It seems that there is still a lot of activity, just outside the zones we patrol and frequent. However, they were pretty much left alone, until they came near the temple. The natives began harassing them and ambushing them. They noticed however, that the attacks were not so much done as to hurt them, but rather to keep them away from the temple. Realizing this, they pushed straight for it, only to be attacked by a massive native strike force. Through pure ill luck, the Darkhaven mages were struck down short into the battle, brought low by blowpipes firing heartseeker grubs." (Silver:) A shudder runs through her at the mention of heartseeker grubs, glancing over to Hewnar and Shadeem with pity. (Tatiana:) Her mouth dropped open with horror. "They are barbarians!" (Arlon:) Arlon listens closely as Sir Kael is relating the story - he would rather hear it from Mendahl though. At the mention of the rot grub missiles, Arlon cringes slightly. (Dithion:) The mention of the rot grub missiles seems to surprise him... "Incredible....very resourceful." (DM/Sir Kael:) "Thereafter, the battle turned into a nightmare. Hewnar and Shadeem escaped only through luck and chance, at the cost of the others. They had to leave behind all their equipment in order to swim through rivers, and set traps to throw off pursuit." "Naturally we are now even more interested in this temple-like building. If the natives try so hard to keep us away, there must be something there that we can somehow use to our advantage against these savages. If this is the case, it may be vital we get our hands on whatever is there. Also, we know that the natives cannot use our magic, so all the equipment of our fallen comrades should still be where they fell, and it is of great importance to the city that they be recovered. We would like to put the items in the city coffers, to be able to give them out as rewards for rendered services. We would ask you if you would be willing to take on this task for the city. To recover the lost items, avenge the deaths of our brethren and investigate the temple." (Arlon:) After Sir Kael is done, Arlon doesn't speak up right away - which seems unnatural for him. (Falrun:) After hearing about the demise of the Darkhaven Dozen, Falrun ponders a moment and then asks, "After considering all that we have just heard, if we take this assignment, would we be able to get some small assistance? I would like to have an invisibility spell cast on us and maybe some sort of transportation spell - fly maybe? - so that we may get to the temple without very much resistance. Then we could find out what was so important about this temple." "Because the natives are expecting intruders, it shouldn't be that hard to sneak back out once we are done so I expect we won't need help getting out, just getting in." Turning to the others, "Does that sound like it should work?" (Silver:) Her attention still taken with the Lady, she looks round at Falrun. "Sorry ? Oh ..." she realizes what he asked and says "Yes, yes. You have the expertise here, Falrun." Silver returns to studying the Lady when she thinks that she is not looking. (Arlon:) "Your plan does have merit Falrun; but there are small problems. Fly spells only have small durations, at least compared to 4 days. We would probably use them about an hour away from the temple. The other problem is invisibility, I only can make myself invisible and unless we could get potions or scrolls for invisibility we're out of luck. Potions or scrolls of flying would also be of great benefit for it would save some very vital spells that the mages could cast. (DM:) A clarification: with four days in-land, is meant four days of foot-travel, this through jungle, means probably no more than, say, 12 hours of flight or so. (Falrun:) "That may be, but the point of my idea was simply to get in undetected and, preferably, quickly. The method isn't important, nor do I know much about the technical aspects of the spells." (Tatiana:) Tatiana reached out a hand and touched Arlon on the shoulder, before he continued on. "Dear" she said to Arlon, "Falrun is only offering ideas for a plan. Not THE plan we will follow in the end. We can plan that out in private when we are alone later." "But I do agree that getting out will be easier than getting in. But only if they don't know we are there. Otherwise I don't think they'd let us back out of the temple alive." (Arlon:) Arlon gets a little upset that he is getting rebuked for his comments about Falrun's plan. Actually the interesting thing is - this happens to me a lot also, people think I am ridiculing their idea when I just point out some obstacles to actually make it work. This is why I had Arlon say 'the idea has merit' which didn't seem to come through very well; obviously I still need work with this skill :( "Just a minute here!" he gives Tatiana a look of disappointment - remember the look he gave her in the cave during one of the Arlon/Keilan 'debates', he then turns back to Falrun. "I didn't say the plan was useless, I was pointing out some obstacles that would need to be worked on - I liked the plan! Besides, if you didn't want input you shouldn't have asked for it. Sheesh!" an expression of exasperation OOC: He will obviously need to apologize to Tatiana later .. he calms down fast, realizing the company he is in. (Falrun:) "No problem, Arlon. No offense was taken. I was simply putting forth a plan to be worked out. I completely expected your input, nay, required your input. I bow to your knowledge and understanding of magic and need any information that I can get to fully develop a plan. I just didn't think that I had made my idea clear enough. Thank you for your comments." Falrun says in a perfectly honest and business-like tone. (Arlon:) Arlon will nod at Falrun as if to say sorry for the outburst. (Tatiana:) Tatiana shrugged her shoulders at Arlon as she realized she hadn't supported him the way he had expected her too. Falrun handled it well and it seemed the others had things well in hand. Arlon, ever the tactician was giving advice to Falrun, as were the others. (Arlon:) The thing I most worry about are those rot grubs, we need to be able to shield ourselves .. maybe using some good size cloth for each of us, to hold up in front of us to block the grubs. This trip will definitely call for a planning session!" He waits for the others (anybody) to make comments. (Shade:) OOC: Forgive my ignorance guys, but I'm a poor Italian guy. What's a rot grub? (Silver:) OOC: Evil little beast - they attack skin, a successful attack meaning that they burrow within your body seeking your heart, and then you die. A very painful death. First time I've heard of them being used as missile weapons though ! (Shade:) The drow shivers, then he assume a thoughtful expression "Isn't there a spell called 'protection from normal missiles'? It should be suitable to this situation if these little friends are not magical creatures. On the other side if they are 'protection from evil' should be the right spell." (Silver:) Silver says to Shade "Ebu, these heartseeker grubs. You think that protecting yourself from normal missiles or evil might work. I'm not so sure. I wouldn't have thought that these were _normal_ missiles, as they are living creatures. And as for whether they are inherently evil, I do not know about that either." "But I do know that insects are within the realm of Mielikki, and have heard of these creatures being subject to Her power and majesty. I may, with Her kindness, be able to repel such creatures." "But I feel that as a humble servant I could not issue that protection very far from me. Still, it may help" she shrugs. (DM:) At Falrun's question about whether any assistance is possible, the enigmatic Daermon smiles and answers. "If you are willing to take on the mantle of the new Dark Haven's Champions, understand that with all the inherent responsibilities will also come several perks and privileges. Naturally if you work for the greater good of the city, the city will also aid you in your endeavors to that effect. Anything reasonable you ask for which is ours to give, will be given to you to aid your efforts." (Falrun:) Bowing slightly to Daermon, "Thank you, your grace. I appreciate your offer but first we must all be in agreement before donning such a great responsibility." (Tatiana:) "That's good to hear." She said to Daermon. "But for the life of me I don't know why you'd think we'd work against the good of Dark Haven. It is our only home after all. Perhaps you might tell us what items are available that grant the power of flight and secrecy. Not necessarily the same items of course. Like rings of invisibility, cloaks of elvenkind, wings of flying, all that neat stuff." (Arlon:) "The prospects of exploring an ancient temple are too great for me to pass up. The dangers would probably be greater than anything we have faced so far however." He looks toward Keilan, assuming he will be the most uncomfortable with the situation, a tough battle will probably be inevitable. (Tatiana:) Catching the glance Arlon gave Keilan. "Keilan, you will be indispensable in ensuring we arrive at the temple at all I'm sure." (Keilan:) "I rather doubt that. My skills seem to be outweighed by the tricks Arlon and Tatiana enjoy flaunting. Though perhaps my skills will be indispensable in making sure *I* arrive safely..." (Arlon:) Arlon seems to suddenly remember something, he turns to Mendahl. "Mendahl, after our battle with the demons in the temple, Shade was able to store some of their ichor and such. Could these be used to create some sort of potion that could aid us?" (DM/Mendahl:) "My, my. Demon Ichor. I am sure our friend Daermon can find some good use for it somehow (smiling at Daermon). Speaking of Demons. I further investigated the crystal and lead wall you guys found in the deep mines. It is a good thing indeed that you left it unopened. Several powerful spells allowed me to find out that it is the prison of one of the greater Demon Lords, imprisoned there so many years ago. From what I gathered, it followed some of those who fled here during the Core Wars, and tried to slay and enslave the poor fellows. However, they proved too strong in magic, and bound and incarcerated the creature there. The temple you also found, was probably built to protect the site of the Demon Lord, and the Daemons there, as deterrents against evil doers, with the scepter (he refers to the ritualistic trident) as bait for the greedy and evil. It is well know that the various evil critters such as Demons, Daemons and Devils had little love lost on each other even." (Dithion:) He really perks up at the mention of the demon lord. He seems a bit agitated. (Arlon:) "Demon Lord!" he looks at Silver "Much pain and suffering would be released is right." (Silver:) "The beauty of the Augury" Silver mutters, smiling slightly, remembering the time that gift was given. (Arlon:) "How long can that wall hold?" OOC: This looks like it will be really interesting. A demon lord - why do I smell trouble for a small group of adventurers later. :O (Dithion:) Moments after the mention of the Demon Lord, Dithion says to the others "I will meet all of ye back at the inn or where ever you all decide to meet to discuss this." He turns and leaves. (Arlon:) As Dithion walks out of the meeting Arlon thinks *The way of Des, I guess* (Tatiana:) Dithion's disappearance disturbed her some but she discounted it as the ways of Des. Tatiana observed all as was the way of a bard. She smiled at Silver's infatuation with the dragon. Kaeyar had gone his own way and was no longer one of the Eidolon, such was the way of things sometimes. The life of risk and adventure wasn't meant for everyone. (Falrun:) As Dithion leaves Falrun says with pleased look on his face, "I take it that Dithion is in then." However, a puzzled look crosses his face as Dithion walks out the door. (Silver:) Silver looks surprised as Dithion walks out of the Temple. Shrugging her shoulders, she turns back to the group. "Where does he go to ?" she wondered, out loud, not expecting an answer. Then, turning to talk to Tatiana, Silver asks "Where _does_ Dithion go to ? I know he worships Des, whose realm is that of wanderers, but he does wander off rather a lot. Do you think he has .... met someone ?" Tentatively, she adds "And ... how's Tuft ?" (Tatiana:) Silver asked her how Tuft was doing, and she could only shrug as Tuft hadn't wanted to speak yet. She could tell something was going on, but didn't want to intrude on his thoughts just yet. (DM/Mendahl:) "I also looked further at the ant man you found. It is a very rare specimen of Formian. Formians are rare to begin with, and usually black in color and fairly stupid. This purple Formian however, showed signs of ability to possess great intellect. The specimen was unfortunately quite dead however, and I have no clue yet as to why it was entombed in the crystal." (Arlon:) "Formians! I remember now." (DM/Shilara:) Then the Lady Shilara speaks up suddenly, her musical voice filling the cold void of the great temple hall. "I heard you are looking for housing arrangements, and wanted to build a company headquarters perhaps. Not wanting to sound cruel and harsh, but mayhap, if your findings entail that the Darkhaven Dozen have indeed been decimated beyond retrieval, you could take over their old headquarters. We cannot have buildings stand empty, and efforts will have to be started to furnish homes for those who will arrive in a few months time, so it would be more expeditious to use existing homes than have you build another one. Also, it would not do for you to have to sleep in the inn or on the cold ground, now would it." The last said with a laugh in her voice and a smile in her face, directed mainly at Silver, Shade, Tatiana and Arlon. (You cannot keep secrets from a dragon :) ). (Tatiana:) Tatiana gave Lady Shilara a queer look like she didn't quite understand what she was talking about. (Arlon:) Arlon is not surprised, dragons are extremely magical and perceptive creatures. He will smile at her knowingly and then slightly bow his head towards her. He then gives Tatiana's back a quick rub. (Silver:) OOC: Trying to imagine what an awe-struck character is like ... She's not going to make much contribution to the planning while the Lady Shilara is present ... As Lady Shilara speaks, Silver becomes even more taken with her, and oblivious to what is going on with the rest of the group. As the Lady suggests new sleeping arrangements, directed partly at her, she smiles and makes as if to respond, but then can't find the words. She simply smiles, wide-eyed, at the Lady. (Falrun: ) "But what of these two who remain? We could not throw them out of their home while they are in need. What will happen to them?" Falrun says, just a little startled by the Lady's comments. (Tatiana:) "Well, when they are healed up, which looks like soon, then I'm sure they will want to avenge the deaths of their friends. And we can discuss with them the wisdom of joining our group, to protect Dark Haven." (Keilan:) "It would at least give us a quiet place to have our shouting matches. If they (the two survivors) still have need of the place surely there will be room for us to share it. (musing for a moment) Has anyone asked if they will return to the native's temple with us? Their knowledge would certainly be most helpful." (DM/Shilara:) To your indignation at the suggestion of throwing the two survivors out of their homes, Shilara further explains: "Ah, but you see. The house I talk about was their headquarters, not their residence. Their residence was another building, which they will retain, their HQ however, was supplied by the city, and will be given to you for use if you are willing to become the new champions. I see you take offense at my pragmatism. I am sorry. It takes some getting used to to you shortlived species, filled with so many emotions." (Shade:) "Sometime the emotional overload of short lived species can be very interesting, o great Lady" - grins Shade - "I find the stoic nature typical of long living creatures so boring ...." (DM/Arthenon:) Meanwhile, the high priest looked dubiously at Keilan and his kitten, frowning at a wild beast being brought into the sacred halls. Upon seeing the manner in which Keilan relates to the creature though, understanding dawns upon the old man, and he speaks to Keilan. "I see you have found a familiar on the continent. It is good to see that this earth doth not spawn evil alone." (Keilan:) "He's just a motherless cub like myself. Birds of a feather and all that." (DM/Daermon:) Also, Daermon eyes Shade, and nods to him in recognition of a fellow drow. Daermon's hands flicker, as he gestures to Shade in the silent language. *Welcome brother. It is good to see another who has risen above the vileness of our race. I am always glad to meet one of those who escaped the clutches of our poisonous caves. If you ever need any help, know that you can seek me out. I understand much of what you must have gone through. If ever you need a fellow exile to speak to, my door is always open.* (Shade:) *My pleasure, master, it was really a great ordeal to get out of the hold of my family, but great reward followed. And a big part of this reward is meeting a kind soul like yourself. Thanks.* (Silver:) When Shade speaks to the Lady, Silver waits a moment, then looks at him, to see that he is looking at Daermon and sort of waving at him covertly. It was only that Silver stood so close to Shade that she noticed this movement at all. Trying to be covert herself, she also waves discretely at Daermon in the same manner that he and Shade were using. OOC: She doesn't seem to realize at the moment that this is an actual language (Arlon:) As Shade and Daermon hand signal to each other, Arlon thinks to himself: *Interesting, a hand language - that would be quite useful in many cases. It really could have helped during that time in the tavern - he smiles - I'll have to ask Shade to teach me this.* (Silver:) Whispering to Shade, she says in a breathless tone "Isn't she simply _wonderful_ !" (DM:) When further questions are asked about the availability of magical aid, Mendahl speaks: (with a smile) "I but wish we had such items in abundance, to give to those in need. Nay, our aid will mostly entail potions and scrolls which our esteemed Daermon and I can create, and furthermore, any spells that us mages and the priests can cast to your aid." (Falrun:) "Could you, m'lord, please expound on what those might be, for those of us who are less knowledgeable in the mystic arts. Would a fly spell get us there in one day or is there another means of transport?" "Also, concerning the fringe benefits. I don't mean to impose or overstep my bounds, but would that also include normal weapons and equipment?" (Arlon:) "Well, first we need to confirm that we want this commission and if so we need to hold a planning session and identify all our resources. I say Yeah. What of the rest of you .. Falrun?" (Falrun:) "I think we should take the commission. Why are we here if not to help? Besides, the officials of the town are offering their help that could be a great resource, either now or later when we find that we could really use their help." Falrun slowly looks to each member of the group and says, "Any other suggestions?" (Shade:) The bard shoulders slightly "Things have greatly changed for me from the time when I got here ...." - he smiles at Silver (Silver:) Silver smiles fondly back at him. (Shade:) ".... but I'm still an adventurer at heart." - then, in a icy cold tone - "besides, such an evil deserves retaliation." (Silver:) Silver studies the drow for a long moment, then nods seriously. "How can we do anything but help our friends" she says, indicating Mendahl, Sir Kael, and the others, but blushes once more as she looks towards Lady Shilara. (Keilan:) "Let's at least meet somewhere and plan this thing sensibly. Here is not the place and now is not the time. Let the priests have their temple back and we'll mull this over a nice mug of strong drink. It may even be my turn to buy." (Falrun:) Shrugging slightly, he turns to Arlon, "Why don't we go ahead and make our plans while we are yet in the company of Mendahl and his associates? Certainly they have knowledge that exceeds ours. I, for one, would certainly cherish their comments and opinions." (Arlon:) "My thoughts exactly Falrun." he then turns toward Mendahl "May we have the benefit of your wisdom - and of course Daermon and Lord Kael, as we plan this undertaking?" (Silver:) Silver looks to Shade, rolls her eyes while nodding towards Keilan, Falrun and Arlon. Out loud she says "Well, wherever you all decide to talk and plan, we ought to do it as a party. I'm going out to see if I can find Dithion. I'll be back soon. Don't go off without me - I'll meet you back here." She then embraces Shade fondly, nods at Tatiana saying "See you later, 'Ana" and with a long backward glance at the Lady Shilara, goes out the front door, closing it carefully behind her. She sighs and smiles. "Such beauty!" she will say to herself. And so as the group discuss the offer, Silver searches for Dithion .... (Silver:) Leaving the temple of Lathander behind, Silver looks about to see if there is any sign of Dithion. Finding none, she asks some of the crowd milling around which way he went, and thanks them. Shouted questions reach her, and she replies, smiling calmly "No, nothing has yet been decided. But we will do whatever we can for the protection of Dark Haven. This _is_ our home, after all." She shows much more calm than she feels, however. Following the directions given, Silver moves quickly, trying to catch up with Dithion. He is one of the more noticeable people in the village, so many of them could say which direction he was headed in. As she neared the coast, she heard the first comment "Sure, saw him head up toward Mindak's Rock" (DM:) Since Dithion is a fair climb away from the rest, it will take Silver about 30 minutes to get to the mine, and get the attention of the dwarves on where Dithion is exactly. Silver, Dithion is currently in the mine, in the room with the crystal wall imprisoning the Demon Lord. (Silver:) *Oh No !! Not the mines ! _Surely_ not the mines !* and hurries on, hoping to catch him before he enters them. Too late, however, as she arrives at the mine entrance and one of the dwarves confirms that Dithion entered some time beforehand. She hesitates, not certain what to do. Seeing the dwarves give her funny looks, she offers a silent prayer to Mielikki, steels herself and goes into the mines, after obtaining permission from Mindak or one of his deputies. The dwarves in the mines direct her to where Dithion headed. She seems to be crouching low, and quite scared. Finally, she will see from the torchlight which she brought with her the large form of Dithion at the end of the tunnel near the strange crystal wall. She closes up to him, and he turns, a strange look in his eyes. She shrinks back from him, suddenly and noticeably scared. Approaching him cautiously, she will say quietly "Dithion, I'm glad I caught you. The rest of the group are making plans right now for the journey. I am not much good at this type of thing - but I thought we could all do with your experience." (Dithion:) He looks at Silver for several moments...you look into his eyes, and it is as if he doesn't recognize you. He turns and looks back at the wall, a frown coming to his face. (Silver:) "Anyway, I had another reason for coming after you. You seemed very anxious after the Demon Lord was mentioned by Mendahl, and left soon afterwards. So what gives, Dith ?" she says, nodding toward the wall. (Dithion:) He turns toward Silver again and looks deeply into her eyes as if he is looking for something. It is almost surprising when he says, "What gives? A good question, Silver....what gives." He seems to be lost in thought as soon as he finishes what he is saying, his eyes on the crystal wall. He lowers his large frame to the ground. He sits facing the wall, his legs crossed beneath him. He places his hands upon his knees, palms up and closes his eyes. He holds this position for what seems an eternity, but what you know to be minutes. Then he opens his eyes, and slowly gets up. He looks at you again, and says, "Shall we go from this place, Silver? It is not the place for you...in fact, I am surprised you came down here...there are no trees, nor blade of grass." (Silver:) "It is not my most favoured of haunts, Dithion" Silver replies, her voice without humour. "But I thought to help if ..." she pauses, then "... but no matter. I was obviously wrong." (Dithion:) As you two walk toward the surface, he seems silent and a bit weary. (Silver:) Silver is also silent during their walk back to the surface, looking occasionally about her with dread at the darkness and oppressive walls of stone. (Dithion:) When you both finally step back out and into the sun, he cracks a slight smile and says, "It is good to be out of there..." He looks back toward the entrance and a slight frown comes to his face again. He seems to shake it off and looks toward the blue sky above. You see him smile as he begins ambling down the hill. He looks toward you again as you and he walk toward the temple. Then he says, "I suppose I should explain myself ..." (Silver:) Silver looks at him expectantly, her expression softening ... (Dithion:) "... I will do so, but at another time....now I just want to enjoy this day and this sun as much as I can." (Silver:) Silver's face clouds at this, but she says nothing, walking in silence beside, perhaps a little behind, Dithion. Returning to the temple, Silver and Dithion note that the crowd has thinned significantly, especially since reassurances were given by Mendahl, Daermon and the others that "things are in hand". Entering the temple once more, they find no trace of the rest of the party, except for a priest nearby who recognizes them and gives them directions to the new headquarters where the party had headed. (Dithion:) Upon arrival at the temple and finding the others gone to the new HQ, Dithion says, "Well, let us go yonder to make our plans...we have a new continent to free from the savages." (Silver:) Silver makes a noncommittal grunt and makes her way also to the new HQ.
